Have you ever wondered how the modern mobile DJ came to be? Well, wonder no more. As a concept, DJs have been around for a long time… but not like they are today!
In 1906, the first broadcast on the radio was made. By 1910, radio broadcasting had become a common thing. Although this is a different kind of DJ, it laid the foundations for what we have today.
In the 1950s, these radio DJs began to throw parties in person, using PA systems (which then became known as Sound Systems). Equipment began to develop through the 50s and 60s, such as the mixer, which Francis Grasso used to mix his songs to keep the party going. These early DJs used to perform in clubs and it wasn’t until the late 60s and early 70s that mobile DJs truly began to appear.
Now, Mobile discos: the concept of these originated in 1966. Roger Squire set up a service in London known as “Roger Squire’s Mobile Discotheques” – he performed at 60 functions each week. As these became popular, he set up an equipment supply service which popularised them further.
LED lights were sold along with sound systems: budding musicians utilised these to begin their own companies.
Mobile DJs are known today for their communication with customers and their planning of the events (thanks to the MTV show My Super Sweet 16).
